Sonali Bendre said that she was ready to leave the film industry if she did not perform well in the song Humma Humma from Mani Ratnam’s 1995 film Bombay. At that time he had done only five films and choreographers often took him to classes for his dance moves. Her breakthrough came when she danced with Prabhu Deva’s brother Raju Sundaram on the hit song Humma Humma.

She told that at that time people believed that if you do not know how to dance then you cannot become a lead heroine. Sonali said that she wanted to dance because the song was choreographed by popular choreographer Prabhu Deva. Speaking to PTI, Sonali said, “I am not a trained dancer. When I came into films, I was reprimanded by the dance directors for my dance. ‘I have become a big heroine, I don’t know dance’. Meaning if You can’t dance, you can’t become a heroine, so I started taking training in ‘Bollywood dancing’ before and after the shooting.”

The actress recently revealed that she had to face body shaming in the initial phase of her career. Talking to Hotterfly, she said, “When I came into the industry, heroines were not so thin. Every producer was trying to make me fat. Producers used to tell me to eat, eat, be very thin. They wanted curves. At that time women with curves were considered beautiful and I had straight black hair and was thin.”

Sonali Bendre worked in films like Diljale (1996), Major Saab (1998), Sarfarosh (1999) and Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999). She won the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000). He also worked in Tamil films like Kadhalar Dhinam (1999) and the Telugu film Murari (2001). For this she was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Telugu Actress.
