Dispute in Lalit Modi family over stake in company: Younger brother Sameer accuses mother of getting him beaten up, files complaint at police station

There has been a tussle in the Modi family, the promoters of Godfrey Phillips, a Rs 11,000 crore company that manufactures cigarettes and confectionery (sweets, cakes and chocolates etc.), over the division of the company’s shares. Director Bina Modi and her younger son and the company’s executive director Sameer Modi have clashed. Sameer has complained against his mother Bina Modi for getting him attacked at Delhi’s Sarita Vihar police station. He alleged that his mother prevented him from attending the board meeting. On his mother’s orders, his security personnel attacked him, which also resulted in his finger being broken. He said, “My finger has been joined by a screw. After the death of the company’s promoter KK Modi in 2019, the matter of division of the company’s shares reached the court. Currently the matter is pending in the Supreme Court. This family owns 50% of the company’s shares, which are currently worth Rs 5,500 crore. Apart from this, the Modi family also has a lot of shares in many other companies of the group. Lalit Modi’s younger brother is Sameer Modi. KK Modi has two sons and 1 daughter. Elder son Lalit Modi is accused in the money laundering case. Daughter Charu Bhartia handles the educational business of the Modi Group. Younger son Samir Modi handles the retail and cosmetics related business. The company was established in 1844. On the ongoing tension for these shares, Lalit Modi once said that the legal battle going on with his mother and sister is tiring. Godfrey Phillips India Limited, known for Marlboro cigarettes, is a subsidiary of Modi Enterprises. It was established in London in 1844. Its head office is in Delhi.
