Educational Degrees Should Include Mother’s Name: Delhi High Court has given a big decision during the hearing of a law student. The court has said that wherever the name of the guardian is mentioned on educational certificates and degrees, the name of both the mother and father should be there. The court has clearly said that merely the name of the father has no meaning. Hearing the petition of a law student, the bench of Justice C Hari Shankar said that the names of both the parents should be compulsorily mentioned in the main part of the certificates. There is no need for any kind of debate in this.
Where is the matter?
This matter is of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. This petition was filed by law graduate Ritika Prasad. He said that he had taken admission in the five-year BA LLB course. When the course was completed, the degree given to him had only his father’s name written on it and not his mother’s. Ritika said that the name of both mother and father should be there on the degree.
What does the court say
The court says that this matter may seem simple but if its full dimensions are discussed then it is an issue of great social importance. UGC had issued a circular in this regard on June 6, 2014, but it was ignored. The court has expressed regret over this also.
15 days time given to the university
The court has given 15 days time to the university. Within this moratorium, they have to issue a second certificate on which the names of both mother and father will be there. The court also said that it is a matter of pride that today most of the youth joining the bar are girls. And the good thing is that 70 percent of the students who graduate are girls. The court further said that equality of recognition is very important. It would be insulting to raise questions on this.
